What sets it apart

Most fragrances are blended and bottled. Fragrance 3.9 spends three months inside new Cognac oak barrels first — sourced from cooperages in the Cognac region of France, the same oak used for the world's finest cognac. The wood changes the structure of what is inside it. It contributes a smokiness that is architectural, not decorative. It cannot be replicated by adding a smoky ingredient.

How it wears

The opening is bright — grapefruit and green herbs, clean and sharp, lasting about 20 minutes. Then the heart: tobacco and jasmine, dry with slight warmth. After an hour, the base arrives. Sandalwood, leather, a thread of vanilla. And under all of it, the barrel — not dominant, but present. By the end of the day, the base is still there.

Top — Grapefruit, Aromatic Herbs
Heart — Tobacco, Jasmine
Base — Sandalwood, Leather, Vanilla
Beneath everything — three months in new Cognac oak.

Why AUD 320

Fragrance 3.9 is an Eau de Parfum — approximately 20% fragrance concentration. That is the same concentration tier as the world's most recognised niche fragrances. The barrels are sourced from Cognac-region cooperages. Ageing takes three months and cannot be shortened. Each bottle is filled and labelled by hand in Sydney. The founding batch is 50 units. We do not reduce input costs to lower the price point.

Founding supporters: use FOUNDERS10 at checkout — AUD 288. Available through 31 August 2026.

The batch

Elegance Alpha was founded in January 2026 by Maxime Cousseau, who moved from Bordeaux to Sydney in 2012. Thirteen years between two countries. A French perfumery tradition and an Australian landscape that has its own severity. When the fragrance he was looking for did not exist, he made it. This is the first batch.

Questions

What does it smell like?
On first spray: bright grapefruit and green herbs. Within 20 minutes, the heart opens — tobacco, jasmine, warm and dry. The base arrives after an hour: sandalwood, leather, a trace of vanilla. Under all of it, the barrel — not overwhelming, but present. It smells like something that has been through a process.

How long does it last?
As an Eau de Parfum at approximately 20% concentration, expect 6 to 10 hours on skin. The base notes — sandalwood, leather — are the most tenacious and will still be present at the end of the day.

What is barrel ageing?
The fragrance concentrate rests in new Cognac oak barrels for three months before bottling. The wood releases tannins and aromatic compounds that interact with the fragrance at a molecular level — deepening it, rounding certain notes, adding a smokiness that cannot be approximated with an ingredient. The barrel changes the structure of what is inside it.

Is this a limited edition?
The founding batch is 50 bottles. When it sells out, there will be a pause before any second batch. The formula may evolve. This bottle is the first version of the fragrance as it exists now.

Where is it stocked?
Elegance Alpha is available here and at two Sydney stockists: Les Deux Garcons (Newtown) and Allegria Flowers & Homewares (Wareemba).
